US-441 across the crest of the Great Smoky Mountains, from Gatlinburg, Tennessee, over Newfound Gap to Cherokee, North Carolina. About 33 miles through the most visited national park in the country. The road climbs roughly 3,000 feet from the Sugarlands valley to the 5,046-foot gap at the state line, then drops down the Oconaluftee side into North Carolina, passing through nearly every forest type in the southern Appalachians on the way up and back down.

Newfound Gap is the lowest drivable pass through this stretch of the range and the historic heart of the park: the stone Rockefeller Memorial at the state line marks where the park was dedicated in 1940, and the Appalachian Trail crosses the parking area. A seven-mile paved spur climbs from near the gap to Kuwohi, formerly Clingmans Dome, the highest point in the park. Because the drive gains so much elevation, spring green and fall color reach the top weeks after the valleys below.

The park charges no entrance fee, though parking for longer than fifteen minutes now requires a paid parking tag. The main road stays open year-round but can close for snow and ice at the top in winter, and the Kuwohi spur closes for the season in the colder months. There is no fuel inside the park, so fill up in Gatlinburg or Cherokee first.

Gatlinburg
The Tennessee gateway town at the north end, where the Parkway (US-441) runs from the shops straight into the park. Last full services, fuel, and food before the climb.
Sugarlands Visitor Center
Park headquarters just inside the boundary, at the junction where Little River Road branches west toward Cades Cove. Exhibits, restrooms, and the effective start of the Newfound Gap climb.
Morton Overlook
A west-facing pullout about a mile below the gap on the Tennessee side, looking straight down the Sugarlands valley. One of the best-known sunset spots in the Smokies.
Newfound Gap

Deep Creek Valley Overlook
A North Carolina-side overlook on the descent, looking out over the forested Deep Creek drainage and the ridges toward Bryson City.
Webb Overlook
A lower overlook named for newspaperman Charles A. Webb, with a wide view south across the layered blue ridges of the North Carolina Smokies.
Oconaluftee Visitor Center
The North Carolina visitor center near the south end, next to the Mountain Farm Museum, a collection of historic log farm buildings moved here from around the park. Elk often graze the fields at dawn and dusk.
Cherokee
The southern terminus, the main town of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians on the Qualla Boundary. Fuel, food, and museums, plus the connection to the southern end of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
