How Plot Along compares

Plot Along vs Roadtrippers

Roadtrippers is a POI catalog with a trip planner attached. The catalog is real: five million points of interest, curated guides and RV-safe navigation for people who need it. If your question is what to stop at, it has answers.

The planner is where it thins out. The free plan is one trip with 3 stops. Collaboration costs $49.99 a year, and even then word of your co-planner’s edits arrives as an email notification up to a day later. Plot Along starts the whole group on one live map for free, and the road between your stops is yours to choose.

Feature by feature

Plot Along vs Roadtrippers feature comparison
Feature Plot Along Roadtrippers
Real-time collaboration Yes. Everyone works on the same map at once and sees every change as it happens. Pro and Premium only, and not live. An edit reaches the rest of the group as an email notification up to 24 hours later.
Live cursors Yes. You can watch your friends work the map, pointer and all. No.
Multi-stop routing Routes are the whole point. Drag a stop and the road route redraws for everyone. Yes, with its own turn-by-turn navigation on Pro and Premium, plus CarPlay. No Android Auto.
Stops per trip 8 waypoints per route free, 25 on Hobby, 50 on Pro. 3 stops and a single trip free. 20 on Basic, 50 on Pro, 150 on Premium.
Scenic routes The route keeps the roads you pick. Avoid Highways means avoid highways, not a polite suggestion. The router picks the road between stops and favors the fast way. The scenery lives in its POI database, not in the routing.
Export formats Opens in Google Maps and Apple Maps on every plan. CSV export on Hobby. GPX, GeoJSON and KML for your GPS on Pro. GPX and PDF, paid plans only. Navigation can hand off to Apple Maps, Google Maps or Waze.
Works in browser Yes, on any device with a browser. Nothing to install. Yes, plus native apps. Offline maps are Premium only, in the mobile apps only.
Price to plan with someone else Free forever, no credit card. Pro is $5 a month billed yearly. Collaboration and navigation start at Pro, $49.99 a year. Offline maps and RV routing need Premium at $59.99.

Where Roadtrippers fits

Roadtrippers earns its keep as a discovery tool. If a trip starts with browsing what exists between here and the coast, its library and guides have no equal in the category, and RV travelers get real value from Premium’s RV-safe routing and overnight parking data.

The planning side is where the trade-offs show. The free tier covers 3 stops on a single trip with no sharing included, and getting a second person onto the plan starts at Pro, $49.99 a year. Even then the collaboration is asynchronous: you hear about your co-planner’s changes from an email notification up to 24 hours later, not by watching them land on the map.

Which one should you pick?

Pick Roadtrippers if discovery is the hard part of your trips, or if you drive an RV. Nothing else matches its catalog, and RV-safe routing is a real need it serves well.

Pick Plot Along if the plan itself is the point. You and a friend get a live shared map with 8 waypoints per route without paying a cent, everyone watches the route take shape and the finished trip opens in the nav app each person already uses. What Roadtrippers charges $49.99 a year to approximate, Plot Along does better for free.

Don't take our word for it. Our featured driving routes are live Plot Along maps you can open without an account. Pick one, then try building the same thing in Roadtrippers.

Plan your next trip together
